Hackettstown, New Jersey

The congregation of Trinity United Methodist Church http://www.catchthespirit.org is vibrant, energetic, strong, and growing.  Located in Historic downtown Hackettstown, New Jersey, the TUMC community was in great need of additional space to support their expanding ministry activities and to accommodate contemporary worship services.

While HQW Architects was working on the development of a facilities master plan for the Church, work began on the renovation of a newly acquired building.  Using information gathered in the master planning process, a detailed building program was established and a design was created to meet the needs of the congregation.  The new facility includes a flexible space suitable for large gatherings and weekly contemporary worship services.  Additional spaces include smaller meeting rooms, a food pantry, and childcare facilities.

Sparta, New Jersey
Area: 10,000 sq. ft.

The Sparta United Methodists http://www.spartaumc.org are a people committed to the practice of open hearts, open minds, and open doors.  With a growing congregation and the need for a fellowship hall it was decided that a new sanctuary was required to meet the ministry goals of the church.

In response, HQW Architects designed a compact, cruciform-shaped sanctuary which allows the congregation to surround the altar and have closer interaction with the ceremony than can commonly be had.  The plan was designed to maximize flexibility allowing for a range of worship configurations and expanded capacity for peak services. The uplifting space is highlighted by a wood frame, cathedral ceiling finished in natural wood.  The creation of this new space allowed the old sanctuary to be converted into a fellowship hall.

Swartswood, New Jersey
Area: 3,952 sq. ft.

Aldersgate Center http://www.aldersgatenj.com/, located in rural northwestern New Jersey, is a camp, conference and retreat center owned and operated by the Commission of Camps, Conferences and Retreats, which is affiliated with the Greater New Jersey Conference of the United Methodist Church.  In order to meet the goals of their mission it was determined that a multi-purpose building suitable for worship, weddings, seminars, and workshops was needed.

Working within a limited budget, HQW Architects designed a small Chapel and meeting hall that compliments the surrounding landscape.  Due to the building’s flexible design, it is able to serve the needs of both the summer camp and the retreat center.  The space is divided into two main sections; the sanctuary and a large lobby which includes a kitchenette and restrooms.  The facility can comfortably accommodate 180 people and is in heavy use throughout the year.
