Newton, New Jersey
Area: 10,000 sq. ft.

The New Jersey Herald http://www.njherald.com was first published in 1829, making it one of New Jersey’s oldest published newspapers.  Over the years, HQW Architects has designed three separate additions for the growing local paper with the critical requirement that production operations not be disturbed during construction.  The first addition housed a new state of the art printing press which required its own foundation.  Structural stability to ensure proper functioning and reliability of the press was critical because the cost of the press exceeded the cost of the building and it formed the main production element of the daily newspaper.  Later building additions faced similar challenges and were finished without incident or extra cost.

Roseland, New Jersey
Area: 32,000 sq. ft.

The Bobst Group http://www.bobstgroup.com/Global/Corporate/en, a Swiss manufacturing company, was in need of a North American headquarters building and production plant.  HQW designed a building sensitive to the landscape and the occupants.  To take advantage of a heavily landscaped site the building was designed with a low profile to allow grade to reach the base of the windows and blend in with the surrounding tree lines.  Using a saw toothed pattern for the plan gave the building a greater number of windows which allowed more natural light to penetrate the interior.  Although much of the steel frame and masonry building is devoted to light manufacturing, the corporate offices are the focal point of the building.
