Additional Historic Preservation Projects

By HQW Staff
Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

For all preservation projects, documenting the historic resource is the important first step.  To that end, McCabe & Associates, Inc. has produced high-quality reports on buildings and structures throughout New Jersey.  We have conducted an historic analysis of an abandoned local branch of the Central New Jersey Railroad in Ocean County, produced a Section 106 report for a Moravian Distillery in Hope, provided consultations on a private renovation of an 1850 dwelling in Newton, and included Mahwah’s Darlington School in a comprehensive survey of Mahwah’s historic sites.  Many old buildings and structures deserve the recognition and protection offered by both the State and National Registers of Historic Places.  The firm of McCabe & Associates, Inc. can prepare documents for presentation to New Jersey and national review boards for individuals, organizations, and public agencies.

Wood’s Hole, Massachusetts
Area: 15,000 sq, ft.

Workmen removing paint inadvertently ignited a small fire on one of the homes several porches. Having thought the fire was out they left for lunch. Upon their return the house was ablaze. The structure, having a doubled walled exterior, had allowed the fire to continue burning unnoticed inside the exterior wood shingled wall.

Originally retained by the Owner to do estimates of the replacement value, HQW was retained to document and rebuild the home. Historical documents were researched and the remaining structure measured to accurately reproduce the proportions and character of the original building. To comply with current codes, the old structure needed to be reinforced and new mechanical systems installed. Since its completion in 1988, the home has been published in Preservation Magazine and is being considered for inclusion in the Massachusetts State registry of historical buildings.

Adirondack Camp – Kamp Kill Kare

By HQW Staff

Raquette Lake, New York

Kamp Kill Kare is located in the region of Raquette Lake in the Adirondack Mountains of mid-eastern New York State.  Constructed by the Garvin families of New York State as a summer resort, it remains as one of the great Adirondack camps built in the early 1900’s.  In recent years with minimal utilization, many of the buildings became in need of restoration and repair.

Of the 23 buildings at the camp, HQW Architects was responsible for the renovation of 5 major structures; the Casino, Boat house, Maintenance Garage, Spa, and the Gardener’s Cottage.  HQW also installed new primary electrical services to the camp with distribution to all of the structures. All restoration work was designed and built to retain the rustic character of the original Adirondack style architecture.  These included exterior bark coated log walls, railings made of tree roots, wood shingled roofs, and stone walls and fireplaces.

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

McCabe & Associates, Inc. provides Burlington City’s Historic Preservation Commission ongoing technical assistance as they fulfill their responsibilities set forth in the Historic Preservation ordinance.  In the course of consultation, we identified the source of a water intrusion at the Temple B’Nai Israel.  Assistance was given for the selection of materials to repair fire damage at 305 High Street.  Advice was provided for the choices of exterior materials for a Bed & Breakfast conversion at 214 High Street.  A review was conducted for a 19th-century carriage house, currently the Tourist Bureau office.  We guided the Commission through a controversial slate and brick walkway replacement project on the grounds of St. Mary’s Church.  Additionally, we worked with the new owners of 106 East Broad Street to follow the Secretary of the Interior Standards during the rehabilitation of their historic building.

Cape May New Jersey

By HQW Staff
Tuesday, December 22nd, 2015

The City of Cape May is a well-known example of historic preservation as the foundation of economic revitalization.  McCabe & Associates, Inc. is currently conducting a historic architectural survey of the historic district core.  The survey includes a thorough description, a contemporary photograph, and a map of each resource as well as a summary of research into the individual history of each historic building or structure.  As well as many contributing buildings, the key individually eligible buildings surveyed so far include architect Frank Furness’s Fryer’s Cottage on Perry Street, the Stockton Row houses on Gurney Street, a Second Empire style house on Jackson Street designed by Philadelphia architect Stephen D. Button, and the former Cape May High School—now used as the City Hall.

McCabe & Associates, Inc. provides Mount Holly’s Historic Preservation Commission ongoing technical assistance as they carry out the duties established by the local Historic Preservation ordinance.  We work with many homeowners helping them follow the Secretary of the Interior Standards during the rehabilitations of their historic buildings.  We have offered design reviews for projects involving the 1815 Farmers and Mechanics bank on Mill Street and the façade renovation at 24-26 Mill Street.  We reviewed applications regarding a new fence at a Garden Street residence, a new synthetic slate roof at a High Street residence, and a rehabilitation at 215 Garden Street, part of the Neighborhood Preservation Program.  As a special project, we crafted a Historic Structure Report of the historic Mill Race, dug in 1723.
